How to back up your Library

Backup your EndNote library regularly

We strongly recommend that when you make additions or changes to your library, you create a back up version as soon as possible. This can be done either by creating a static Compressed Library or a live, online version referred to as Sync.

The Compressed Library

To create a compressed EndNote library, go to the File option in the top menu within Endnote > select Compressed Library and follow the instructions in the pop-up window.

This will turn your .enl file type into .enlx

Save your compressed library in at least one secure place. Preferably your student or staff drive at University, Microsoft OneDrive, or another cloud drive (ie. Google, iCloud).

Please note, to use your compressed version of your library, you will first need to save it onto a desktop. Endnote does not work from a cloud drive.

Do NOT email, save or run an uncompressed EndNote library to or from a cloud environment, such as Dropbox or Google Drive. This will eventually corrupt or damage your library.

Syncing to Endnote Online

Details on how to work with Sync to Endnote Online, please refer to our separate Library Guide.

This uploads your entire set of references to your account at https://endnote.com/login/

You can only sync one library to one account.

You can only sync 'manual' groups, not Smart Groups nor group sets.
