Endnote 21

Find full-text feature

Endnote will fetch full-text of journal articles and attach it to a pre-existing reference in your Endnote library.

Follow the Hints for Better Results in the lower right box for best results.

  • Highlight the relevant references in your Endnote library [Highlight one reference with a click and press Ctrl-A to highlight all]
  • Press "Find fulltext" icon
  • Be patient; it can take up to 20 seconds per reference to fetch and attach the PDF in some cases

 Results:

  • As the search starts, you will see the word "Searching..." at the bottom of the left pane
  • If the search for one reference fails, this will indicate as "Not found". (You may be able to find the article by other means and attach it using the "Attach file..." option in the diagram below)
  • If successful, a paper-clip icon will appear next to the reference and you can see the PDF in the right pane. You can open the PDF using the icon indicated in order to makes notes etc.

Find Full Text Progress

  • Find full text progress is indicated at the bottom of the Groups pane
  • 'Searching' will appear as the retrieval process proceeds
  • when it's all finished, 'Searching will disappear and be replaced with final results

Note: 'Not found' means only that this Endnote process has failed for that reference; it does not prove UniSC has no access. Check our Journal Titles list to make sure.

Edit>Preferences>Find full text

The EndNote Find Fulltext preferences should be set as the following:

  • The OpenURL Path is:

http://usc-edu-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/openurl/61USC/61USC_SP?

  • The authentication URL is:

https://ezproxy.usc.edu.au/login

Note: the authentication URL field can be left blank while on campus.

Hints for better results

  • It helps if the DOI is somewhere in the Endnote reference
  • Include your Endnote Online login within the preferences
  • This feature works best with IP authentication

Optional: There is some evidence that you can improve the hit-rate of "Find fulltext" by having a linked Endnote Online account. If you would like to try this, sign up for Endnote Online by following the instructions on UniSC Library's Endnote Online Libguide. After you have done this and are in Endnote desktop again you can interact with your EN Online account via the left pane of the Endnote screen. This also allows you to transfer records from EN Online to Endnote desktop.
