Endnote 21

Install the EndNote Click browser add-on to detect and automatically add a reference and PDF to your Endnote library while you view it on the publisher website

Create a record from a PDF with a DOI

This method is for PDFs with a clearly visible DOI

To create an endnote record with the PDF attached:

  • File> Import>...File
  • From the pop-up, Choose PDF import option.
  • Click Choose to navigate to the directory on your  computer (to wherever you have saved it)
  • Choose the PDF
  • Click the pop-up's Import button

This will create a complete Endnote record with the PDF attached.

What is a DOI?

DOI (Digital Object Identifier):

  • A permanent internet address for a journal article etc
  • Not used by all journals
  • When used it is found
    • on the first page of the article
      DOI example
    • sometimes in a citation. Eg APA:

Bugg, J. M., DeLosh, E. L., & McDaniel, M. A. (2008). Improving students' study habits by demonstrating the mnemonic benefits of semantic processing. Teaching of Psychology, 35(2), 96-98. doi: 10.1080/00986280801977519

Import many PDFs at once

Use the Import Folder function

This is similar to import PDF but you can import many PDFs in one directory folder at the same time.

Follow the same instruction as for a single PDF, but:

Instead of the File>Import>...File step, Use:

File> Import>...Folder

...and continue form there.

NB: each PDF must have a DOI visible on it or the process will not execute properly.

Notes

This is a quick and accurate way to:

  • Create an Endnote record
  • Attach the associated PDF

To do this you need:

  • a PDF with a clear and unambiguous DOI showing somewhere on the PDF

Why would you do this?

  • If you already have a PDF that has a DOI showing on it, this is the quickest and most convenient way of creating an Endnote record amd simultaneously atting the PDF to it
