Endnote 21

What's new and different in Endnote 21?

  • Major change in design look and feel
  • Altered placement of some menu items
  • Some enhanced functionality as explaind in this video...

What's new in Endnote 20 video

IMPORTANT:

EndNote 20 (and Endnote X9.3 and later) use a different (64 bit) database engine from EndNote X9.2 and earlier versions. This means that EndNote X9.3.3  and Endnote 20 library files are not backward compatible. (You cannot open an EN20 library in ENX9.1 or X9.2)

EndNote libraries created in EndNote X9.2  and earlier CAN be converted into libraries openable by EndNote X9.3.3 or Endnote 20.

A full explanation of this change and some trouble shooting  instructions can be found here on the Clarivate Support website.

Upgrading to EndNote 21 (Windows)

  • Before upgrading it is important you back up any of your libraries, custom styles, filters or connection files
  • EndNote 21 (EN21) will open libraries that have been created or used with Endnote X9.3 and later.
  • If you open a library created in an earlier version (say X9.0 or X9.1 or X9.2) you will be asked if you want to "convert" it, as a new database engine was introduced at version X9.3. Say YES to this. A new library file will be created that will open in EndNote 21. Note: Converted libraries will not open in earlier EndNote versions
  • Uninstall previous versions of Endnote before installing EndNote 21. This will not affect your EndNote libraries.
  • If you have edited styles or downloaded UniSC styles (such as Harvard), filters or connection files these may be kept in a previous EndNote folder on the hard drive
  • Please check C:\Program Files\EndNote 21(or previous folder)\Styles (or C:\\Program Files (x86)\Endnote 21\Styles on UniSC computers) or
Connections or Filters. If you still require these files, move them to the Endnote 21 Styles, Connections or Filters folder. Delete the old EndNote folders from your hard drive. If you still require these files move them to the Endnote 21 Styles, Connections or Filters folder. Delete any old EndNote folders from your hard drive.
  • Use the compressed library feature to email your library to yourself a colleague as backup if required
  • If you write papers in collaboration with other researchers, or share EndNote libraries, it is essential that all collaborators use a compatible version of EndNote or use Endnote Online
  • It is recommended that you create an Endnote Online account (see instruction on Endnote Online LibGuide) even if you do not intend to use it. It is said to improve full-text retrieval. Endnote 21 and Endnote Online are highly inter-compatible and designed to be used together.
