Create course reading lists in Canvas Courses

Monitor student usage via analytics

The Analytics icon is displayed on the right pane of every reading list. To view analytics select the Analytics icon.

Analytics provides information about how students engage with reading lists and individual items. Analytics information is updated daily.

From within the Analytics pane instructors can:

  1. view overall reading list usage;
  2. view student usage for each item;
  3. filter usage by section or item;
  4. export student usage data.

To clarify the type of data being measured, hover your mouse over the information icon.

To close the Analytics pane, click on the X in the top right hand corner.

Create engaging Course Readings: Tips

Length, relevance and currency

It is recommended Course Readings possess three important characteristics:

  • They are a manageable length.
  • Readings are linked closely to learning activities and assessment tasks.
  • Lists are updated regularly with recent, quality sources of information.

These characteristics benefit students by reducing cognitive load and building focus, which in turn contributes to academic success (Thorpe et al., 2024).

Notes and tags

Notes and tags can also be used to boost engagement by communicating expectations, emphasising relevance to learning and assessment tasks, and can help students develop their critical thinking skills.  Please refer to Add items, notes and tags for instructions.
