Create course reading lists in Canvas Courses

Embed a section from Course Readings into a Canvas module

Once your Course Readings is complete, you can incorporate a section from your list into any Canvas course module.

Note: This is optional and allows you to include relevant library resources directly into your Canvas course modules.

  1. In your Canvas module, select the + to Add Item.

  1. Select Course Readings.
  2. In a few moments, your reading list will display. You can expand or collapse sections using the toggle arrows located near the section title. Select the radio button near the section you wish to add to your module.
  3. Click Select.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Add item to Course Readings window.
  5. Insert your Page Name (i.e. Week 2).
  6. You can leave the default settings or select the options you desire:
    1. Load in a new tab (browser).
    2. Indentation.
  7. Select Add Item.

  1. Click the newly created item link to check that it opens correctly.
  2. Ensure it links to the desired section of your Course Readings list.

Note: you can edit the item in the Module to change the Title, Indent and Tab options, however you cannot change which section it links to. To edit, select the ellipses menu located on the right of the item.

If you need to link to a different section in your Reading list, you will need to Add a new item (Step 1) and complete the process again.

 

Embed an item from Course Readings into a Canvas page

Once your Course Readings are complete, you may incorporate an individual or group of items from your reading list into Canvas course pages. You can choose whether to insert items into an existing course page or create a new page specifically for your items.

Note: this is optional and allows you to include relevant Library resources into specific course pages.

When you import an item into Canvas, it will form a link to the item and provide brief details about the resource.

  1. In your Canvas course, add a new page or open and Edit an existing page.
  2. Place the cursor where you’d like to insert the items.
  3. Select Apps (plug icon) > View All.

  1. Select Import Citations (An alternative path is Tools Apps > Import Citations).
  2. Tick the check boxes for the items you want to import.
  3. You can change the text for the Link label, or leave as View item.
  4. Select the preferred Bibliography style using the drop down.
  5. Select Add. Your items will load momentarily on your course page.
  6. Scroll down the page and click Save.
  7. Click on the new links to ensure your items launch correctly.

Note: item images may occasionally appear as broken. If you wish to replace a broken icon with another option, follow the steps below. 

  1. Click Edit on the Canvas page.
  2. Right-click the broken icon and select Emoji.
  3. Scroll through the available icons and choose a suitable replacement. Note: books, folders, and documents icons are located within the Celebrations and objects category (balloon icon).
  4. Click the X to close the emoji popup box when done.
  5. Click Save.
