UniSC Research Bank

DOI, ISBN and ISSN allocation

An identifier such as an DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) can make your research more discoverable and citeable. The Library can provide you with these identifiers if you meet certain conditions.

Note: the Library does not apply for ISSNs (International Standard Serial Number) on behalf of schools and research centres, but we can guide you through the process.

DOI minting

UniSC can provide DOIs for objects that meet the criteria below. By minting a DOI through UniSC you are placing UniSC as the curator of your work.  DOIs are automatically minted for theses and datasets in UniSC Research Bank.

To request a DOI for your research output, please enter your request into the administrative notes of your deposit to UniSC Research Bank.

You can request a DOI for the following types of grey literature:
  • Conference items that are not already published elsewhere (papers, posters, presentations, abstracts)
  • Creative works / NTROs
  • Report
  • Working paper
  • Discussion papers
  • Technical papers
  • Submission to government
  • Research datasets and associated software
The following criteria must be met for DOI minting:
  • The item must not already have a DOI.
    • Before minting a new DOI for grey literature, ensure that there is not a DOI already assigned to the output by interrogating the CrossRef and DataCite databases.
    • This will include any records that are available in other repositories, such as FigShare, ResearchGate and Dryad.
  • The item must be available as open access or have a temporary embargo.
  • Permanently embargoed or items for which the full output is unavailable are ineligible for a DOI.
  • The item must be managed by the Library in the UniSC Research Bank as the primary publication point.
  • The item must be unpublished or published by UniSC. It must not be available elsewhere managed by a third party (e.g. ResearchGate, Academia.edu, etc)
    • Published material, even if it does not have a DOI issued by the publisher, are ineligible for a UniSC minted DOI.
  • The item must contribute to the scholarly record.
  • The item must have a current UniSC author.
    • Outputs that have been created while a UniSC author was at a previous institution may still be eligible for a DOI provided that the other criteria are met.
What happens if I need to update my output after a DOI is minted?

Before submitting a DOI request, please ensure that the output is unlikely to change significantly.  Changes to the output file or any information that is used in a citation (author, title, publisher, publication year) will require a new version DOI to be minted, which will be linked to the older version DOI.

Please email research-repository@usc.edu.au to discuss any changes you may need to make to your output after a DOI has been minted.

ISBN allocation

An ISBN can be allocated to outputs produced by current UniSC staff and students and published by UniSC and it's departments.

You can request an ISBN for the following types of items:

  • printed books
  • e-books
  • education or instructional software
  • items identified as eligible on the Thorpe-Bowker website, the operators of the Australian ISBN Agency.

Approval for an ISBN must be granted by your Head of School/Director, and attached to the ISBN request form.

Legal deposit obligations

Under the Copyright Act (1968), one copy of everything that is published in Australia is to be given to the National Library of Australia (NLA) under the legal deposit provisions. You may also be required to deposit a copy with your state Library.

Further information on legal deposit can be found on the NLA legal deposit webpage.

Obtaining an ISSN for research publications

The Library does not apply for ISSNs on behalf of research centres, but we can guide you through the process.

If your school or research centre is publishing a serial or periodical (e.g. a journal, bulletin, or newsletter), you can apply for an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) through the ISSN Australia service, managed by the National Library of Australia.

Important Notes

  • Each format (print and online) requires a separate ISSN.
  • ISSNs are used for cataloguing, indexing, and citation purposes and help improve the visibility of your publication.

For more information, visit the National Library of Australia’s ISSN page.
