Research skills tutorial

3.1 Types of information sources

Through UniSC Library, you can access a wide variety of information sources including:

  • Dictionaries
  • Encyclopedias
  • Books
  • Electronic databases (indexes and full text)
  • Journals, magazines and newspapers (available in print or electronically via databases)
  • Course readings
  • Statistics
  • Local Planning documents
  • Videos (DVDs and streamed) and CD ROMS
  • Websites relating to courses studied at USC

Before deciding where to look for information you need to consider what type of information you need.

You will use a different approach if researching for a lengthy analytical essay than you would if you were writing a 500 word overview.  This is because the amount of information and the depth of information you need will be different.
