A guide to writing an essay

Step 1: Plan your time

  • Create a plan for completing the essay on time with the UniSC Assignment calculator.

Step 2: Analyse your task

  • Review the task information and marking criteria (rubric). 
  • Carefully analyse the question or topic, looking for direction, content and limiting words.  
  • Consider what you already know and what you need to find out.

Step 3: Find credible information

  • Consider how your course readings might be related to your topic.
  • Develop a search strategy and read credible information widely, in locations like the UniSC library. 
  • Research informs what you are going to write about and gives your ideas credibility. Be sure to record referencing information at this stage.

Step 4: Create an essay plan

An essay plan is helpful to keep your essay on track and ensure it has the main components.

Step 6: Review and revise

  • Your essay may take several revisions. See the essay editing and review checklist from Griffith University below for a guide on each revision. 
  • Consider submitting your essay to Studiosity for additional feedback 'link provided below' or log in through Canvas following the instructions below the link.
