Generative AI

Before you start: Always check if and how the use of generative artificial intelligence is permitted in the preparation of your assessment task. Unauthorised use of generative AI or paraphrasing tools can be a form of academic misconduct.

How to Acknowledge Generative AI use in Assessment

If you are allowed to use Generative Artificial Intellegence (GenAI) to prepare your assessment, you may need to acknowledge its use. It is important to check each task for specific guidelines and instructions on GenAI use, whether it is permitted or not, and if the Course Coordinator requires an acknowledgement.

Below are some examples of how to acknowledge the use of GenAI programs in preparing your assessment. Remember these are just examples and must be personalised to your use.

Acknowledgement

Let’s break it down:

Acknowledgement Statement:

  • Start with a clear acknowledgement of the use of GenAI.

  • Mention the specific GenAI system you used (provide a link if available).

Prompts Used:

  • List the prompts that were input into the GenAI system.

  • These prompts are essential for transparency and understanding how the information was generated.

Output Modification:

  • Explain any changes made to the output generated by the GenAI.

  • Did you paraphrase, rewrite, or adapt the material? Describe the actions taken.

Acknowledgement statement  I acknowledge the use of Microsoft CoPilot, in this assessment for analysing the impact of globalisation on cultural identity and suggesting arguments to support the negative impact globalisation is having on the sustainability of culture. Additionally, Microsoft CoPilot edited my draft making suggestions to improve my academic writing style and reduce word count.

Document Your GenAI Use

Additionally, it is beneficial to record your drafting process, particularly when you are using GenAI, to ensure transparency and accountability. You can do this by:

  • Saving copies of each step to create a record that can be shared with instructors to facilitate respectful conversations about your work.
  • Keeping a copy of your conversations or prompts with GenAI as well, if possible.
  • Use a table or tool to track your use.

Here is an example of a table that could be used to track how you have used GenAI. This is just an example, you need to check your specific task instructions as to how you are permitted to use GenAI for each assessment task.
