Mooting

The Hon. Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition

The Hon. Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition is a three/four day competition for teams representing law schools in Australia. The competition is organised by the Victoria University.

The moot simulates an arbitration for parties in a contractual law dispute. It consists of the preparation of a written memorandum by the claimant, a memorandum by the respondent and oral hearings.

Moot court provides a stimulating and challenging avenue for students to improve their research skills, ability to conduct legal analysis, persuasive writing techniques and oral advocacy skills. These are the very skills required of an advocate in law practice.

In 2019 the Moot competition was suspended, however the competition will be back in 2020

National Women's Moot

The National Intervarsity Women’s Mooting Tournament was first introduced in 2011 by the Sydney University Law Society (“SULS”) in conjunction with the NSW Young Lawyers Special Committee of Law Students’ Societies (“SCLSS”). It is aimed at addressing the equity issues facing women at the bar and is the only national moot in which all competitors must be female.

Although the traditional barriers facing women at law school and within the legal profession have generally improved such that our generation may benefit from a more equitable professional environment, the same developments are arguably yet to characterise the bar.

The Australian Red Cross, ALSA and the International Committee of the Red Cross host the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Mooting Competition each year.

The IHL Moot's purpose is to raise awareness of international humanitarian law issues within the Australian university community.

Australian Environmental Law Moot

The Australian Environmental Law Moot  launched in 2012 at the Federal Court of Australia, in Melbourne. This is a nation-wide mooting contest, open to all Law Schools across Australia.

This is more than just a moot about the environment; it encapsulates all the areas of practice in the law we associate with the environment – natural resources, energy, water, climate change and planning laws, conservation and sustainability.

We invite Law Schools and law students with interests in climate change, environment, energy, resources, water and planning laws to compete in the Australian Environmental Law Moot, in the hope that we may proactively contribute to the thinking and further the jurisprudence in these areas of law.

This Mooting competition appears to be no longer operating in 2019.
