Endnote 20

Reference management software for research

Honours, Research postgrads and staff

UniSC clients in the above categories have full access to the installed software version of Endnote. This has considerably more features than Endnote Online and is more suitable for longstanding research projects.

Contact ITS if you think the Endnote program is not installed on your UniSC work PC.

You can download the installation software from the Installation page to put Endnote onto your home PC or laptop (Mac version available as well). The Library has regular Endnote training classes for staff and postgrads.

EndNote vs. Endnote Online

EndNote is a software program for referencing which is installed on a computer. There is a web based version (Endnote Online) which allows you to save and organize citations as well as format them.

It does not have many of the more advanced features of Endnote but is useful if you are away from your main computer. You can save citations to Endnote Online and easily import them to Endnote desktop version later using the Sync feature. It also gives you the ability to share references with anyone you choose (like your research team or your students). You can set up an Endnote Online account  if you use the desktop version but it's optional.

Endnote Online requires no downloading or installation (aside from the optional plugins). UniSC students and staff can use Endnote Online freely, but if you leave the University your Endnote Online access will cease 12 months after your last login on campus or through the Library's website.

UniSC also has a software site licence for the installed version of Endnote and it is pre-installed on all Library (and many other computer lab) PCs.

It is easy to export/import sets of references in either direction between Endnote Online and Endnote using the Sync function.

Review the comparison chart of Endnote versions.

NOTE: The Library only provides Endnote training to honours students, research postgraduates and staff.

EndNote Basic (free)

  • EB is a free, limited web based version of EndNote.
  • Anyone can install this version anytime, free of charge. This will never be necessary for UniSC staff or students as we have a full site licence.
  • But, if you leave UniSC you can keep your Endnote libraries and continue to use them with EndNote Basic.

Visit EndNote support to learn more about Endnote Basic.

Alternatives

If you don't need long term storage of citations, if you don't think you'll reuse them, or if you just need a quick formatted citation in a major style, you might want to try one of these other options.

Many databases and websites provide citations formatting in APA and other styles (but NEVER for the Harvard(Qld) or Vancouver styles in use at UniSC). Look for buttons and links that say something like, "Cite Now" or "How to Cite". Some databases will have a citation at the bottom of the page.

Warning: Always double check automated formatting against the rules and examples provided in style manuals and guides. Be especially careful of capitalization, proper names, and dates.
