Language and Literacies in Education

AATE is the national arm of Australian state/territory associations for the teaching of English - all members of these organisations pay an affiliation fee to AATE, and are automatically members of it.

AATE members are part of an international network of teachers with a commitment to teaching and learning in the field of language and literacy.

The Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) is an independent professional association dedicated to literacy and English language learning from early childhood through all stages of schooling and tertiary education contexts. ALEA recognises the critical role literacy plays in learning and communicating in all curriculum areas, and for effective participation in society. Pre-service teachers can join at reduced rates. Founded as the International Reading Association (IRA), the International Literacy Association (ILA) has worked to enhance literacy instruction through research and professional development for 60 years.

STELLAR is hosted by Singapore's Ministry of Education. STELLAR is the acronym for Strategies for English Language Learning And Reading. STELLAR aims to strengthen both language and reading skills as well as promote a positive attitude towards reading in the foundational years through the use of well-established, learner-centred and developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches. The three recommended approaches at the Lower Primary are: Shared Book Approach (SBA), Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA) and Learning Centres (LC). At the Upper Primary, Supported Reading(SR), Writing Process Cycle (WPC) and Differentiated Instruction (DI) are practised.
